Hackday, winding down

Hack Day: London, June 16/17 2007

As I type, the geek crowd is mostly massed to the left and right of the center stage, chatting and last-minute hacking in the dark, by the glow of our laptop screens. The wifi is up, for a change. The mood is relaxed, though a teeny-tiny bit sleepy at times. We just got nice sandwiches served for lunch, and some of us played Werewolf until 3:30 am; or hacked all night. I am resting on a sofa with one of those brilliant beanbags under my legs.

Me, I won’t be presenting a hack, though I’ve got an ever evolving idea. I don’t regret it — I’ll see where my idea takes me, and exploring it with Yahoo! Pipes, JSON, and the Yahoo! and Flickr APIs has already brought me forward quite a number of steps. I also found a bug — well, something that doesn’t work — in the Flickr API and got to tell Cal Henderson, the Flickr archtect — cool! All in all talking with all the smart and pleasant developers, those who really write the stuff that’s available, and those who like myself tinker with it, has been immensely pleasurable. Most are nice guys, too. More on these conversations later. Things are hotting up for the final presentations.
